Forward-thinking composers and sound designers Grace Ferguson and Fia Fiell take over the Salon for a night of immersive and other-worldly soundscapes.
In the hands of classically trained composer and sound designer Grace Ferguson, the piano becomes a conduit for speech. The nuances of both internal and public conversation are reflected in her intuitive approach to melody, rhythm, dynamics and silence. With improvisation forming part of the foundation of her creative process, no two performances are ever the same.
Prizing the seemingly small, ephemeral thoughts and gestures that punctuate our daily lives, Grace will perform pieces from her recently released AMATOR EP as well as new works alongside a series of partly-improvised collaborations with the Melbourne musicians who most inspire her.
As Fia Fiell, electronic musician Carolyn Schofield combines her profound practical and theoretical chops as a pianist and composer with a most modern and perceptive ear for stretching out the orbit of millennial electronic music constructs. Her live performances involve multiple synths played and processed in real time to create hauntingly ethereal, unsettling and euphoric soundscapes, and she will utilise piano together with electronics for the first time in this performance.
Alongside thoughtful albums including 2016’s debut ‘A Hair, A Heap’ and 2018 follow-up ‘All In The Same Room’, Schofield has cultivated deep renown in critical circles as a thrilling and sought after live performer. She has made appearances at Inner Varnika, Dark Mofo, Freedom Time and Play On plus support slots for Laurel Halo, Merzbow, Rashad Becker and more.
